OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  • Discuss how cultural and social elements are reflected in music

  • Demonstrate an ability to identify individual rock music styles

  • Detect the values of music in everyday life and cite elements of musical heritage

  • Identify the names and contributions of key rock personalities

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Describe the evolution of popular music and its practitioners from the 1940’s to the present day

  • Describe the various styles of music which led to Rock And Roll

  • Recognize various rock styles based on instrumentation, performance practices and lyrical content

  • To discern historical styles and how these styles interact with contemporary music

  • Identify noteworthy songs and albums important to the history of rock music

  • To identify instruments used in rock music and stylistic performance practices

  • To critique a rock work based on lyrical content, emotional expression, delivery style, and instrumental technique

  • To recognize rock music as a rejuvenate, cyclical youth language rather than a set of musical specific styles

EXAMS

  • Tests are based on lectures, films, and the chapter readings

  • Tests are objective and given on 882 scantrons

  • Tests are not cumulative, except the comprehensive listening test
  • Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken by sign-up sheet
  • 10 points are deducted for each absence beyond two (2)
  • Cell phones are NOT to be on during exams
If you miss an exam you may take ONE makeup test the day of the final. There are no listening makeups.
